A severe storm has disrupted communications across Glenunga! Your team has been called in to help. Working as field communication specialists, children will use amateur radios to gather & relay important information back to HQ, where every message must be clear, accurate and follow radio procedures.

Students will learn the international phonetic alphabet, common radio terminology and operating procedures, be introduced to Morse code, and discover simple techniques for estimating heights and distances.
The session begins with a short introduction to the fascinating world of amateur radio, including how it is used for emergency communications, community events and connecting people around the world. Once trained, teams will head out on an observation mission around the local area with a supervising parent.
Using handheld radios, students will:
report weather conditions,
answer challenges from Headquarters,
estimate distances and heights,
navigate using a compass,
and communicate using correct radio protocols.
Activities are designed to reinforce clear communication, careful observation and teamwork in a fun, mission-based environment.
Depending on time, students will also have the opportunity to practise Morse code before finishing with a discussion about how to obtain an amateur radio licence and continue exploring this rewarding hobby.
Throughout the session, students will:
develop practical communication skills,
learn how radio systems operate,
build confidence speaking over the air,
and experience the excitement of completing a real-world communications mission.
This session will head outdoors, so please wear appropriate clothing for the weather on the day.
