Linguistics – Create your own language!

Learn about how language works with this overview of linguistics and language creation activity which has previously run in High Intellectual Potential school groups.

We will start to think differently about how we communicate, look at fascinating differences between languages, and understand the field of linguistics better.

Then we will embark upon a creative world-building and language creation activity – just like Tolkien created Elvish for Lord of the Rings!

• All equipment and materials provided.

• Create your own language from the sounds up.

• Develop words and sentences in your own language.

• Imagine the world where your language is spoken:

• What kind of environment do the speakers live in?

• What sort of clothing will they need?

• What creatures live there?

• Design a flag, map, and clothing for the speakers of your unique language.
