About the event
With many older laptops no longer supported by Windows updates, they can quickly become slow, insecure, or unusable. This workshop shows how Linux can bring those machines back to life - fast, free, and secure.
Geordie Elliott
Geordie Elliott has been tinkering with Linux since 1999. He built his first computer in 1996 and is passionate about extending the life of older technology.
In this workshop participants will install Ubuntu Linux step-by-step, learning how to boot from USB, set up a system, and explore both the graphical interface and simple command line tools. The session also includes a brief, engaging history of Linux (including GNU and open-source origins), where it’s used today - from servers to Android phones to gaming - and what to expect when using it day-to-day.
The session includes:
Live demonstration and guided installation of Ubuntu Linux
Booting from USB and setting up a fresh system
Introduction to the Linux desktop and software centre
Simple command line basics (update and upgrade your system)
Overview of Linux history, GNU, and open-source concepts
Discussion of where Linux works well - and where it doesn’t
Examples of apps for creativity, learning, and gaming (including Steam)
👨👩👧 Parents are welcome to attend alongside their children - no separate ticket required.
⚠️ Important: Participants must bring an old laptop and charger. The device will be wiped during the session as part of the installation process.
